Pyranha 4Twentyby Team Member Logan Bockrath Height: 6'4" Weight: 190lbs Shoe Size: 12
The 4Twenty is a well balanced aggressive play boat in that it performs well on waves and in holes, while still being able to get you through the rapids to that epic play spot that you can not drive to. The first characteristic I noticed was this boat’s hull speed when on a feature; this boat flies down a wave. One aspect I really loved about having the extra speed was the ability to recover the surf after a move; I found that where I normally was blown off the feature I could power back onto it. This boat also bounces huge. Its bounce combined with its speed makes for airtime even on smaller features. My first few surfs in the 4Twenty on a bigger wave were a little out of control; it took me a couple of days to get dialed into it, but after that it was sweet. Even with all of the speed the boat is not stuck in the trough due to its excellent carving abilities. The hard chines on this boat let you carve all over a wave, making it easy to get to the top of a feature, set up, then use the speed to initiate a move into the trough. Also, when carving you are not locked into one direction; the chines release towards the stern making it release well for blunts, spins, or carving to the other side of the feature. I like the 4Twenty just as much in a hole as on a wave. The boat is well balanced for cartwheeling, however it does tend to throw ends fast and vertical. The hardest thing about cartwheeling this boat is keeping up with it, initiating the first end and all the other aspects of cartwheeling are easy. Loops are off the charts easy and huge with the 4Twenty; auto loop. In flat water it cartwheels similar to how it does in a hole, fast and vertical. It is very easy to initiate the first end, from there you just keep up with it. Flatwater loops are easy and big in this boat. It is also easy to stall and balances well on end. The 4Twenty’s river running abilities are fairly typical of an aggressive play boat. It is no doubt edgy and fairly slow through rapids, but that being said, I rarely get stern squirted and it is predictable, as long as I have these two features I like it as a river runner. Pyranha finally got on the ball with the 4Twenty and took out all of those unnecessary bolts in the outfitting that cause that unnecessary weight; this boat is super light. I am comfortable in this boat; there is a ton of leg room if you have the seat in the middle or back. I have my seat all of the way forward; this makes my feet snug (but not uncomfortable) against the plastic. I also put an inch of foam on my seat; with the seat raised up the boat carves, releases and loops amazing, but you of course lose some stability. I feel that I am at a fairly optimal weight for this boat; it trims out really well with the seat forward. The 4Twenty is no doubt a great boat for the advanced, intermediate, or aggressive beginner, however I think the boat might be too aggressive for a timid beginner. -Logan |
