Owners' Profile
Whitewater Warehouse is owned and operated by Bernie Farley and Jeryl Yantis of Dayton, Ohio. They both enjoy whitewater paddling as their primary recreational activity.
Bernie and Jeryl were both very active in the Outdoor Adventure Club (OAC) from the beginning of their paddling careers. Bernie served as President and Vice President on many occasions, along with coordinating a lot of trips and events. There was always something going on when Bernie was around. Jeryl served as Secretary, Membership Chairperson, and as Newsletter Editor. But what she really enjoys is teaching. She has brought many people into the paddling community.
Out of our accumulated experience, knowledge, and love of the sport, Whitewater Warehouse was born in 1994. The store has been a fun and exciting venture for both of us, and we hope to continue for many years to come.
Bernie Farley ![]() Bernie purchased his first aluminum canoe in 1970 and started paddling meandering streams in Ohio. This eventually led to paddling easy whitewater rivers and canoe tripping in the Canadian Wilderness. Due to the lack of available formal canoe instruction, his skills were developed from trial and error. In 1978 he took his first formal whitewater canoeing instruction at a little known place called the Nantahala Outdoor Center. From that day to present he continues to seek out new and challenging rivers. He is what some would consider to be a paddling addict. To this day he continues to use the C1 as his boat of choice. Jeryl Yantis ![]() Jeryl has been whitewater kayaking since 1986. Her paddling career began after taking a trip to the Nantahala River. She picked up a part time job to pay for her first kayak, a blue Perception Dancer, and took a roll lesson. She was on her way! Ronnie Myers, a member of the local paddling club, took her under his protective wing, and a group of them paddled every weekend somewhere. After a while, Dick Gowin, who now lives in GA, took over as instructor and life went on from there. Her favorite place is Colorado, and enjoys many runs out there, like the Numbers and the Roaring Fork. Closer to home some of her most memorable runs have been on the Gauley, the Cheat, and the Caney Fork. But her best memories are of all the incredible people and friends that she has had the honor to meet and paddle with over the years. |
