So, I got a job recently as a river ranger on the New and Gauley. One of my main duties is to pick up trash on the beaches along the river. Well, I know this will come as a big surprize, but some people are not very respectfully to others when it comes to leaving their trash behind when camping. Sometimes, it appears that people actully bring trash with them to dump. Like they bring it down in bags and dump it out and save the bags. And tires. You would not believe the amount of tires in the river. When we do a tire pick-up day, we can get 60 to 100 tires. And that is in one area. One time (at band camp), we had two boats loaded with so many tires, it was had to see over them. We did a trash site project to map and describe trash sites between the Bluestone Dam and Hawk's Nest Dam. A majority of the sites were near the Bluestone Dam. The amount of trash tapered off downstream. The lower section of the New (Cunard down) had the least amount of trash sites. That says something about the rafting companies and local boater community. I think they take pride in the river, but I also think a lot of the local contingent are not aware of the New River above McCreery. I think very few know of Meadow Creek or Brookside. When I worked for the commercial companies, I never put in above Meadow Creek, and I rarely even went to Meadow Creek. It has been an eye opening experience. I attached some pictures for your viewing enjoyment.
